Demo Account

Beginner
Account TypesAlso known as: practice account, paper trading account, virtual account

A practice trading account that uses virtual money and simulated market data, allowing traders to learn platform features and test strategies without financial risk. Demo accounts are distinct from prop firm evaluation accounts, which also use simulated funds but have real financial consequences.

Why It Matters

  • 1Demo accounts are essential for preparing before spending money on a prop firm evaluation.
  • 2They let you practice your strategy, learn the trading platform, and understand how different instruments move — all without risking capital.
  • 3However, demo trading lacks the psychological pressure of real evaluations, so performance on a demo account often doesn't translate directly to evaluation performance.
  • 4Use demos to build mechanical skills, not to predict your evaluation results.

Example

  1. 1Before purchasing a $200,000 evaluation for $599, you open a free demo account on the same platform.
  2. 2You practice your NQ scalping strategy for 2 weeks, recording an average daily profit of $800 with a max drawdown of 2.5%. Satisfied with the results, you purchase the evaluation — but you mentally prepare for the added pressure of real money on the line.

Common Mistakes

  • Spending months on demo without transitioning to a real evaluation — demo doesn't replicate the psychology
  • Using unrealistic position sizes on demo that you wouldn't use in an actual evaluation
  • Assuming demo fills and slippage are identical to live market conditions
